“The surreal and intense visual experience” - Audience member, 2015

KINBAKU merges dance, digital and live music together, creating an installation performance piece for audiences to come inside, walk around and react to – creating an unusual and amazing new eco system in the nave of the church.

It explores the notion of binding, questions how our inner desires form bindings and how we find freedom from it.

“The problem for us is not are our desires satisfied or not. The problem is how do we know what we desire”
Slavoj Zizek

A translucent cube takes centre attention at the beginning of the piece. Digital graphics created by visual artist Dan Shorten will be projected onto the cube, accompanied by a live soundscape by Scott White. Dancer Aoi Nakamura emerges as thin surface of the cube (made of water-soluble material Polyvinyl Alcohol) gradually dissolves.

KINBAKU will awaken audiences’ consciousness and feelings to denote unacknowledged parts of their personalities,
perceptions and judgments.
