Who we are
AΦE, a dance company founded in 2016 and led by artistic co-directors Esteban Lecoq (FR) and Aoi Nakamura (JP), creates installations and performances between dance and immersive realities. These visceral experiences, using science fiction references, question our contemporary relationship with new technologies. Somewhere between misappropriation, reappropriation and forward-looking vision, these interactive works place the audience at the centre of the creative and narrative process, offering a new space for exploration between bodies, spaces and technologies. Our philosophy centers on "choreographing the audience", creating structured freedom where participants feel autonomous while being guided through transformative experiences. We believe powerful immersive work happens when technology disappears, leaving human connection and discovery. Both trained dancers, we understand how bodies tell stories. Our practice extends this knowledge into digital realms, allowing audiences to experience the sensations and emotions we felt as performers while creating new forms of collective storytelling. Our productions toured to 20 countries, over 80 venues. We collaborated with high-end technology brands and research institutions such as Scan Computers, NVIDIA, Creative Technology, Epson, Framestore, Happy Finish, Arcade, SPECS-lab and The Scalable Display. We have established our company as one of the leading dance companies working with technology and garnered the support of some of the most prestigious venues and organisations around the world, including Sadler’s Wells Theatre London, Sydney Festival, Théâtre de Chaillot in Paris, Innovate UK and Arts Council England. Our work has also been presented at International Film Festivals, including Geneva International Film Festival, CPH:DOX, LAVAL Virtual, VRHAM and LOIKKA International Dance Film Festival, allowing us to engage a wide range of audiences.
